That Nerd In Me

Everyone needs a little science in their life. Here I will post things that I find fascinating, interesting, intriguing, neat-O, etc!

NASA is awesome and I think everyone should keep up on their news releases: http://www.nasa.gov/news/releases/latest/index.html

February 1, 2013  Keep an eye to the sky this November!!

Comet ISON was discovered last September and is being called the "comet of the century"! How cool! NO it will not hit Earth, so don't even let your mind travel there. But it's currently out by Jupiter and is causing quite the stir among astronomers and sky watchers.
"On Nov. 28, 2013, this 'dirty snowball' will fly through the sun's atmosphere little more than a million km from the stellar surface. If the comet survives--a big IF--it could emerge glowing as brightly as the Moon, briefly visible near the sun in broad daylight. The comet's dusty tail stretching into the night sky could create a worldwide sensation."

February 15, 2013 Meteorite Strikes Russia!

I find this pretty cool, but scary at the same time. More than 400 people were injured from the explosion of the impact (many from flying glass as the sonic boom shattered windows). There are many videos of it around the web at the moment. Here are some of the best: Russian Meteorite Strike.

Also, here is a place that I frequent for any kind of space related news (SpaceWeather); mostly CME (coronal mass ejection) news and NEO (Near Earth Object) tracker. It's important to pay attention to the Sun and it's Solar Flares because they are unpredictable and can cause mass electrical outages...which would wreak havoc here on Earth. Also important to pay attention to would be NEOs (asteroids, meteors, meteorites) as they are very hazardous to our planet; as learned in the above mentioned strike today.
